Addiction is a very complex subject that we are only starting to understand. For years and years we blamed addiction on a failing of the person's will inner strength. Finally society and health care professionals are realizing that the causes of addiction are very complex with about 50% being attributed to genetic factors.
There are several character traits of people who tend to not become addicted. One of this is self-confidence. Although it is not unknown for a person with good self-esteem to become addicted to a substance, it appears that people who have a high regard for themselves and their abilities are not nearly as easily drawn in to an addictive life style. If this correlation hold it would be prudent for parents to spend time building self confidence in children as a safe guard from addiction. If the correlation turns out to not be true there has been nothing lost because people can always use more self confidence in there lives.
One form of addiction that has not received much attention although it is becoming a massive health problem is pain killer addiction. Good, average citizens through no fault of their own are becoming addicted to certain drugs after an injury that causes severe pain. One of the most addictive pain killers is Vicodin which is actually the trade name for Hydrocodone. Hydrocodone addiction usually occurs after a person has been prescribed the drugs for pain resulting from an accident or on the job injury. Addiction is very quickly achieved if the patients stays on the drug for longer than a very short time.
This is a case where personality traits like self confidence may not play a very big role at all. The person with more self esteem may find it easier to fight the addiction but that has not been proven at this time.

Low Carb Food Diet
Our country is drowning in medical bills and a large fraction of the cost of those medical procedures is because of our epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Both of these can be traced to a diet high in simple carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates come from things like processed white bread, processed sugar, and high fructose corn syrup. All of these are endemic to our diets now a days. Low carb meals can help you to control both of these problems.
The best no carb or low carb food is meat. A long with meat is eggs and anything else that has a lot of protein. The protein works to keep your appetite down and you fill in with vegetable ruffage. You can eat all the green vegetables you want when you are on a no carb foods diet. The things you neet to stay from are white wheat, white rice, potatoes, and white sugar. All of these contain empty calories any way so if you want to lose weight then limiting them will help with that also.
You can usually eat all the meat you want when you are on a low carb diet. The thing is people usually get tired of the protein when they are on this type of diet. The hardest part is sticking with the ban on high carb foods

Is Stress Getting You Down
Are you feeling the effects of stress in your life? Are you having trouble sleeping at night? Have you lost your appetite or are you eating more than you should? Are you cranky ans short with the people around you? Have you lost you interest in life and do you feel that nothing is worth putting effort into?
All of these are symptoms of stress. The number of people who are exhibiting the effects of stress is skyrocketing because of the current economic climate. If you are having any of these symptoms you must seek help to combat the health effects of chronic stress.
I have found the biggest cause if stress in my life is living in the future instead of the present. I ten to be a planner and so I am always planning how things will work out. As you know things never go according to plan. When my plans don't work out I tend to get very upset. It wasn't until I realized that I could either shorten my life by stressing over what could have or should have happened or I could relax and probably live a lot longer.
I chose the latter and I feel much better. I used to have high blood pressure but that is now a thing of the past. The best advice I have is to stop living in the future and don't get bent out of shape if your plans don't work out.
